A killer deal

AASFE short feature winner Michael Kruse: NEW PORT RICHEY — The killing started just after 4 on a hot weekday afternoon at Friendly Kia.

The white four-door Jeep Grand Cherokee La­redo sat in the eight-bay service garage Monday at the Pasco County car dealership on U.S. 19. The paint on the outside was white, the upholstery on the inside was black, and some faded letters on the front bumper said MARDI GRAS.

Secrets behind a mayor's murder-suicide

From The Dallas Morning News (thanks, Erinn): The shocking crime unleashed a torrent of secrets that had been hidden behind Jayne Peters’ almost-perfect public façade.

The family’s house had almost been foreclosed on three times in the past year. Jayne Peters was about to be investigated for personal charges and unexplained expenses on a city-issued credit card. Corinne’s “graduation present” was really a rental car.

“Knowing how much she wanted to protect her from the embarrassment, shame and humiliation of their financial ruin allows those of us who knew her to understand why she took Corinne with her,” said Doug Stover, who preceded Jayne Peters as Coppell’s mayor.

'The Food on a Table at the Execution'

From NYTimes: Near the door of George Steinbrenner's office in Yankee Stadium yesterday, there were two trays of bite-sized roast beef, turkey and ham sandwiches, each with a toothpick in it. As soon as 14 invited newsmen entered his office for the execution of Dick Howser as manager and the transfer of Gene Michael from general manager to dugout manager, Steinbrenner, the Yankees' principal owner looked around. ''Anybody want any sandwiches?'' he asked. ''We've got a lot of sandwiches here."
